Lappeenranta biorefinery

Project Aim

The world's first biorefinery to produce wood-based advanced biofuels to be used as a raw material for various kinds of plastics and for transportation fuels.

About

UPM’s Lappeenranta Biorefinery is unique - the world's first commercial-scale biorefinery to produce renewable wood-based diesel and naphtha. Renewable naphtha is a versatile wood-residue based raw material solution for a vast selection of plastics, enabling our customers to replace fossil raw materials and reduce their carbon footprint. Renewable UPM BioVerno naphtha has already been used, for example, in the packaging, textile, construction and automotive industries – and it has a big potential in many more plastic products. UPM Biofuels utilises crude tall oil – a wood-based residue of pulp production – as a raw material in the UPM Lappeenranta Biorefinery which started production in south eastern Finland in 2015. UPM’s innovative bio-based products are frontrunners in quality, usability and sustainability, and they will significantly decrease greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil equivalents.
