European Bioeconomy in Figures 2008 - 2018
The nova-Institute's market report is commissioned by BIC and was first published in 2016, demonstrating for the first time the macroeconomic effects generated by the bioeconomy, e.g., turnover and employment for the years 2008 and 2013. Since then, the report has been updated on an annual basis. The latest version covers the period from 2008 to 2018.
The new data for 2018 demonstrates that the bio-based industries made a contribution of 780 billion EUR, to the European economy a notable increase of 30 billion EUR (+ 4%) compared to 2017. This represents a more than 20% increase compared to 2008 which is the earliest data taken into account in this series of reports by nova-Institute. Figures for the bio-based chemical industry (including plastics) alone reveal a turnover of around 54 billion EUR with the bio-based share relatively stable at around 15%, up from 7.5% in 2008.
