BIC signs Joint Statement on biogenic carbon accounting in the Product Environmental Footprint
Along with 12 other associations, BIC has signed a Joint Statement recommending the European Commission adopt a consistent approach in carbon modeling. This would provide a clear understanding of the actual difference in CO2 footprints between biomass-derived and fossil-based products at each life cycle stage.
The European Commission is currently reviewing the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF).
The Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) method, based on life cycle assessment (LCA), provides rules to quantify and communicate environmental impacts of products, including goods and services.
The accounting methodology established in PEF will have a profound effect on the recognised benefits of transitioning away from fossil feedstock in products.
