The Netherlands is currently facing sustainability challenges due to its growing population. The inhabitants have a high expectation of life quality, in which noise annoyance is positioned as a valued demand and spotted as a blue ocean niche for sustainable building products.

This team developed a bio-based soundproofing insulation product “BIO-X”, for building insulation, using pig slurry fibres as raw material. Simulations were performed using Data MapeSilent (MAPEI) to come up with an optimal soundproofing design. BIO-X is made of three layers: compressed pig slurry fibres (800kg/m3) enveloped and sealed in LDPE (low density polyethylene) plastic, with a layer of rockwool on both sides.
