Jakub Fener, Julia Ługowska and Natalia Sobolewska from Warsaw University of Technology in Poland make up Team Bioeconomy Student Research Group.

Poland is a country of immense potential when it comes to using biomass as an energy source – most of which comes from farming and process manufacturing, localised in small cities and rural areas. Most of Polish agriculture is greatly dispersed. Some 57% of the entire sector are individual farms between 1-5 hectares in size.

The team’s innovation revolves around supporting local communities to establish energy cooperatives based on biogas plants, fuelled by secondary biomass, and using the cooperatives to address local problems, while upholding cooperative spirit and shared ownership traditions of those communities.
