Bark is one of the largest side-streams from the European forest industry. The bark residues are mostly combusted as a means to extract energy and dispose the material. Bark is considered difficult to convert due to its impurities, high moisture content, complex chemical composition and low energy content. A few product categories from bark-boards to decorative items and few small-volume medical applications have been commercialized. The team’s biorefinery innovation combines two chemical processes and produces a range of valuable products from the wet bark.
