There is a vast amount of untapped potential within Europe for effectively collecting, treating, and valorising bio-waste today.

Since January 1st 2024, it is mandatory for EU Member States to separately collect bio-waste. And yet we still see poor bio-waste models being implemented - or simply none - due to a lack of enforcement.

But how big is the potential if we get things right on bio-waste? And how can it be untapped?

In 2024, BIC and Zero Waste Europe (ZWE) teamed up to produce the 2nd edition of its report, which estimates the current and future availability of bio-waste in the EU-27. According to the report, almost 75% of all food waste generated in the EU remains uncaptured, resulting in huge volumes of methane emissions from bio-waste in landfills and a huge untapped resource of potential compost, which could be used to enhance the health of Europe’s depleted soils.

The report will once again include country-specific factsheets (for the EU-27, the United Kingdom, and Norway). Published four years after the first one, this publication showcases where most of Europe is currently at with regard to the generation, collection, treatment and valorisation of bio-waste.

Together with EU and local policymakers, key stakeholders, and practitioners, this webinar will take a closer look at the report’s findings and analyse the current situation.
