Borregaard

Borregaard has one of the world's most advanced and sustainable biorefineries based on wood as a raw material. By using natural, sustainable raw materials, the Group produces advanced and environmentally friendly biochemicals that can replace oil-based products.

The Group’s main products are lignin-based products and specialty cellulose, but the product portfolio also includes vanillin, second generation bioethanol, fine chemicals and cellulose fibrils. Borregaard’s niche products serve applications in a wide range of end-markets including construction, agriculture, food and beverages, transportation and pharmaceuticals.

Research and innovation activities are conducted worldwide with the main R&D center located in Norway. Borregaard has 100 employees in R&D focusing on the development of new or improved products, applications and production technologies. This also includes multiple pilot facilities for the scale-up of new technologies for the production of biofuels, biochemicals from cellulosic sugars, bio-based performance chemicals such as lignin and microfibrillated cellulose as well as fine chemicals and pharmaceutical products. Future ambitions include the usage of alternative lignocellulosic biomass including forest and agricultural residues as well as broadening the product and application pipeline.

Borregaard has 1100 employees in plants and sales offices in 16 countries throughout Europe, Americas, Asia and Africa.

Borregaard is a partner in several BBI JU projects:

  • BIOFOREVER: BIO-based products from FORestry via Economically Viable European Routes
  • EXILVA: Flagship demonstration of an integrated plant towards large scale supply and market assessment of MFC (microfibrillated cellulose)
  • PULPACKTION: Optimised moulded pulp for renewable packaging solutions
  • SHERPACK: Innovative structured polysaccharides-based materials for recyclable and biodegradable flexible packaging.
