The workshop organised by Science Business, a leading publication on European research and innovation, involving BIC and the BBI JU, refined several key policy recommendations to European and national policymakers.
One of the chief recommendations made at a workshop was the important role for regions in realising the green transformation of the European bioeconomy.
“The local dimension is essential,” said Catia Bastioli, CEO of Novamont. “It’s important to transform peripheral areas into innovation centres.” Bastioli emphasised the need to invest in creating local value chains, rather than focussing on production of one crop or product.
Looking to address this challenge, BIC launched a digital bioeconomy platform earlier this year to connect regions and the bio-based industries with the aim of establishing new local value chains that help realise a circular bioeconomy based on local specificities. The platform enables regional policymakers to describe the value chains they want to create, while companies can define the types of bio-based investment they are seeking to realise.
Other recommendations from the workshop included:
- Coherent and predictable EU policies that incentivise investment in of bio-based products and applications
- Measures and actions to encourage cross-sectoral collaboration
- Realising circular bio-based production models
