BASF

BASF aims to strengthen its position as the world’s leading chemical company. The BASF portfolio ranges from chemicals, plastics, performance products and crop protection products to oil and gas. BASF aims to combine, through research and innovation, economic success with environmental protection and social responsibility. Corporate purpose: create chemistry for a sustainable future. White biotechnology is one of the 3 technology fields of BASF.

Based on renewable raw materials, BASF manufactures products such surfactants and emollients as well as bio-based plastics such as the biodegradable polymer ecovio® and the polyurethane precursor Lupranol® Balance.

Succinity, the Joint Venture between BASF and Corbion is dedicated to the commercialization of Succinity Biobased Succinic Acid®. Succinity BBSA is based on a proprietary fermentation process that allows usage of renewable feedstocks, such as glucose, sucrose and glycerol, and in the future also its production from second generation renewable feedstocks. Besides the flexible use of biomass, the elaborated process also provides a product of the highest purity in a very efficient manner without major waste streams. This biochemical process enables a significant improvement of the material carbon footprint of succinic acid and its applications in comparison to conventional petrochemical products.

BASF and Avantium have formed a new joint venture (JV) named Synvina for the production and marketing of the renewable chemical building block FDCA, as well as marketing of PEF. The joint venture intends to use the YXY process technology to solidify its world-leading positions in FDCA and PEF, and subsequently license the YXY technology for industrial scale applications. Synvina coordinates the “PEFerence” BBI JU project which received a grant of 25 million Euro for the establishment of an innovative value chain for bio-based raw materials as well as chemicals and materials based on polyethylenefuranoate (PEF). It includes the intended construction of a 50,000 tons FDCA reference plant, the main chemical building block for the production of PEF, at the BASF Verbund site in Antwerp, Belgium.

BASF is partner in the PEFerence project - From bio-based feedstocks via di-acids to multiple advanced bio-based materials with a preference for polyethylene furanoate.
