The Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant (BBEPP ) in Ghent, Belgium is a flexible and diversified pilot plant for the development, scale-up and custom manufacturing of bio based processes and products. It operates at a kilogram to multi ton scale and aims at closing the critical gap between scientific feasibility and industrial application of new biotechnological processes. It is a one-stop-shop that performs the full process in a single plant, from the biomass green resource up to the final bioproduct. The pilot plant is equipped with state of the art equipment to perform biomass pretreatment, biocatalysis, fermentation, up- and downstream processing and green chemistry. It focuses conversion of biomass (a.o. agricultural crops and by-products, industrial side streams) into industrial enzymes, fine chemicals, food ingredients, biopolymers, nutraceuticals, bioplastics, biomaterials and biofuels.
Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant is an independent open innovation pilot plant and is accessible for companies and research institutions throughout the world. The core business of Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant is facilitating and speeding up biobased innovations in full confidentiality with clients. Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant is also a partner in many public projects. Its role is scale-up and performing demo runs of the new process.
BBEPP is also active in networking projects with the aim to bring about new bio-based value-chains (Enterprise Flanders projects), namely:
- Biocluster: Building new biobased value-chains
- Ghent Syngas Cluster & Demonstration Plant: building a new value chain around syngas fermentation in the port of Ghent
- BioKatalyse: Sensitisation of the chemical industry in Flanders about the possibilities of biocatalysis
